By Malin: Yesterday I spent a day at the Natural history museum in Stockholm, as always mentored by the wonderful Yngve Brodin. I have definitely become faster and more accurate in my ability to ID hoverflies, so recently Yngve challenged me to try and also ID some blowflies. It turns out blowflies have rather different key features compared to hoverflies... So I'm now adding a lot of new words to my fly vocabulary. I would never have guessed how important all the hairs on the blowfly body are for correct species determination! |
