The Stroop Effect is a well-known neuropsychological phenomenon that demonstrates the complexity of selective attention. The task requires that you name the colour of the ink the words are printed in and inhibit the dominant, automatic tendency to read the incongruent word name. In doing so it provides competing visual stimuli that challenge your selective attention- the ability to respond to certain environmental stimuli while ignoring others. The Stroop Effect is used in many clinical and psychological applications including assessing brain function in patients with brain damage, dementia, alcoholism and ADHD, particular conditions that target the frontal brain area.
