By Karin Nordström The visit to Sweden has been great, with many hoverflies, and lots of rewarding field work. Tomorrow I will leave the Swedish summer to start the long trip back to Adelaide. By Karin Nordström Today we had a lot of hoverfly visits to our flowers, which was fun, but the photos from Saturday are better, so.. - Olga Dyakova It seems that artificial flowers attract children and tourists instead of hoverflies! Even cool weather and clouds can't really stop them from trying to land their feet on petals. Karin was busy with sharing knowledge, I was busy with taking photos, bumblebees were busy with feeding... What hoverflies were busy with we don't know.
- Olga Dyakova Curious faces and frequent question: "are you working here?" Oh, yes! It's a field office! :) Karin is finally in Sweden and a really cool experiment is in a process! Can hoverflies be attracted by artificial flowers? What is important? Light, color, shape, smell or may be image statistics? We will know soon! By Malin Thyselius Karin is finally coming to Sweden! The last few days in Uppsala have been rather grey and rainy but hopefully Karin will bring along some of the Australian sun so that we will have a few more weeks of summer and field work. We of course hope Karin will be bussy with successful field studies while here, but in secret we also hope for some time to talk live. The lab is always a bit more complete with Karin present. Next week I am off to Sweden to test the attractiveness of the fake flowers created in our pollination project. I will post updates on the project's dedicated web page. |
